Chapter Fourteen

It was the longest day. Time dragged as Antoni waited to see Dalton. As soon as he closed the gallery, he bounded upstairs to the flat. He laid out his clothes on the bed—navy chinos, a pale blue shirt with a light paisley print, his newest pair of underpants and dark socks. He ran a deep bath and soaked in the tub with a bottle of beer, listening to an LP of old 1970s and 80s tunes through the open door.

Ethan had checked all the local social media pages before he left and assured Antoni that there had been no new developments in the search for Catherine. If Roger had been missing for so long, Antoni would not have been going on a date tonight. He would have torn the town apart to find him, but Dalton didn’t have any great concern about his sister’s disappearance.

Antoni wondered whether he was experiencing a delayed reaction. The gravity of the situation might not have hit him yet.

Antoni dried off and got dressed.

It was raining heavily when it came time to leave. He grabbed his umbrella and made his way down the narrow back streets, where it was sheltered from the worst of the downpour, arriving at The Lobster Pot five minutes early. It was too rough a night to wait outside, so he went straight in.

Dalton was already sitting at the bar.

Antoni’s heart surged at the sight of him.

“Have you been here long?” he asked as he approached.

“About ten minutes. I was ready for seven and couldn’t see the point of hanging around my hotel room. I guess I was too excited.”

“How are you?”

“Great. Even better for seeing you. You look wonderful.”

Antoni smiled shyly. He was working on it, but compliments were still difficult to take.

Dalton looked sexy as fuck in an open-necked white shirt and a dark jacket.

Their table was ready. Though the restaurant was busy and Dalton had only made the reservation that afternoon, they were given a great spot in the window, overlooking the marina. Antoni had been here more times than he could remember, and he had never been as excited as he was right now.

“What’s good?” Dalton asked, studying the leather-bound menu.

Antoni winced. “To be honest, I haven’t tried any of the vegetarian dishes, so I can’t recommend them. All the other food is first rate, so I have no doubt the veggie menu will be, too. We can go somewhere else if it’s a struggle for you to choose.”

“No way. This is your favourite, and I want to experience it with you. I’ll find something on here to my liking.”

Dalton settled on a starter of heirloom tomato and cucumber gazpacho with a main course of field mushroom burger with halloumi, grilled gherkins, beef-tomato salad, burger sauce and fries. He also ordered a side of green salad. Antoni had never seriously considered vegetarian food, but it did sound good. For himself, he overcame his reluctance to eat seafood in front of Dalton and chose a starter
